Environmental concerns

As part of our wildlife initiatives Beak and Claw have adopted an orangutan.

Name: Miriam
Sex: Female
Weight: 1.8 kg
Arrived at centre: 14 September 2007
Approximate age: Born in May 2007
Previous History: mother died in Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park when she was ~3 months old
Care centre: Batu Mbelin Orangutan Quarantine Centre, North Sumatra

Miriam was born wild in Bukit Tigapuluh National Park, Jambi, in May 2007. Her mother Mena was one of the six repatriated orangutans from Malaysia in 2005. Tragically, Mena died in early September, 2007 of a mystery illness just a few months after Miriam’s birth. Temara, Perth Zoo’s female orangutan who was released into Bukit Tigapuluh National Park in November, 2006, spent some time in very close proximity to Mena and Miriam and showed particular interest in little Miriam. Miriam was sent to Batu Mbelin immediately after her mother’s death. She is attached to her carers and will cry and try to get them if she is upset. She is in an outside cage during the day but goes out for regular climbing play sessions with other young orangutans. Miriam's best playmate is named Ugo Blanco. Her climbing skills and confidence are improving. Miriam sleeps inside at night because she is so young. She eats solid foods and leaves but also receives milk.
